On Friday, March 8, 2024, it's International Women's Day! Library Dommeldal presents "Hidden Figures," the true story of three NASA mathematicians who helped the U.S. take a leading position in the Space Race.
International Women's Day is also a day to focus on women's acquired rights worldwide and to protest, demonstrate, and draw attention to areas that need improvement. Emancipation is an ongoing process.
It is a journey where we still have much to learn daily. Emancipation involves equal rights, equal responsibilities, and freedoms. As long as the right balance has not been achieved, International Women's Day is necessary to increase awareness. Every organization contributes to this in its own way, sometimes collectively, sometimes individually.
"Hidden Figures" is the true story of three NASA mathematicians who helped the U.S. take a leading position in the Space Race. As if their task wasn't challenging enough, the three also had to face a double prejudice: besides being women in a male-dominated field, they were African Americans in a time when racial segregation in the U.S. was legal. Despite these obstacles, they reached the pinnacle of their profession. And they were the best. Eventually, their NASA supervisors recognized that too...
The film tells a fascinating piece of history about the development of space exploration by NASA, against the backdrop of painful racial segregation in the United States. "Hidden Figures" is an inspiring movie based on the book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly, highlighting perseverance and self-belief.
