The Leenderbos, located in De Groote Heide, is the largest nature reserve in the region. Previously, until 1930, this area consisted mainly of vast heathlands, sand drifts and fens. As the name suggests, however, the landscape has undergone changes over the years.
In the wooded area adjacent to the Leenderheide, there is plenty to do. Whether you enjoy active hiking trails or enjoy the beautiful nature, there is something for everyone. In addition, a nature campground, events and various dining options are available.
The area consists mainly of conifers and is characterized as a typical production forest. Before 1930, the vast territory was mostly heathland, but due to reduced agricultural activities, the area fell into decline. The Forestry Commission then decided to purchase the area and afforest it as part of work relief. This resulted in rapid forest growth and significant timber production.
Today the emphasis is less on wood production and Het Leenderbos has developed into a beautiful area with diverse functions. It is home to special animals and insects and is also a popular destination for recreation. The area has numerous hiking and biking trails, as well as benches where you can enjoy nature. The Leenderbos is an attractive location for both local residents and nature lovers.
As part of the Natura 2000 area Leenderbos, Groote Heide & De Plateaux, Het Leenderbos is protected as a nature reserve. It is part of a European network of protected natural areas aimed at preserving and restoring flora and fauna. Staatsbosbeheer and its foresters take care of the preservation and further development of the beautiful nature in Het Leenderbos.
