VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE: FROM ATTACK TO IMPACT │ ANITA VAN DE MANAKKER

from Monday 10 February to Sunday 23 March 2025

During the exhibition Kempro recently organised for its Kempenhaeghe colleagues, we got a taste of the work of healthcare professional and documentary photographer Anita van de Manakker. In her new solo exhibition, she gives us a look through her lens, showing the worlds of three people living with epilepsy on a daily basis. Three different stories with one common denominator: sudden, temporary disturbances in the brain.

Visible and invisible

Anita has worked at Kempenhaeghe since 2006 and has had the opportunity to accompany countless people with epilepsy. Her work brought her into contact with the many faces of epilepsy, a condition that affects people's lives in all its facets and literally disrupts their lives. Anita shows us how this condition manifests itself in seizures, but also affects physical condition, energy and overall well-being. The impact of epilepsy is often wider than people think. The condition imposes limitations that are not always visible but affect freedom and daily functioning. The impact does not stop there. Relatives are featured, with the concerns, challenges and tireless support they provide. Anita also gives us an insight into the lives of family members, giving the exhibition a broader and more complete perspective.

Interviews to be listened to via qr code
Through this exhibition, Anita wants to make the often invisible reality of epilepsy more visible and literally give a voice to the people living with it, as well as their loved ones. Through a scannable qr-code (via your phone) you can listen to interviews of the people portrayed themselves and their loved ones. Because behind every attack is also a person with undeniable resilience, dreams, passions and talents.

Invitation to connect

Anita hopes that the exhibition not only contributes to greater understanding, but also invites viewers to look beyond the condition. This exhibition calls us to think about what we can do for someone living with epilepsy every day - or for their loved ones. Whether it's empathy, practical support, or simply being open and engaging in conversation, we all have the opportunity to make a difference. This is how we ensure that people are not only seen for their epilepsy, but more importantly for who they really are. Only then will there be room for hope and mutual connection.

Everyone is cordially invited on Monday 10 February (International Epilepsy Day) at 14.00 for the official kick-off of the exhibition ‘Visible and invisible: from seizure to impact’. Anita van de Manakker will be present to share her vision with you. This exhibition will run until Sunday 23 March 2025.

Our gallery is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm and Sundays from 1pm to 5pm and is free to enter. For more information about Atelier Galerie Kempro, please visit kempro.nl.
