It is a particularly enjoyable way to get through the winter: a nature walk at Kloostervelden/Sterksel. Especially when IVN's nature guides show you around, you learn a lot about nature and the development of this area. So join this walk on Sunday 19 January. Starting at 14.00, they will depart from the terrace of De Broeders in Kloostervelden. For some years now, Kloostervelden has been a quiet, park-like neighbourhood on the outskirts of Sterksel. While the previous IVN walk focused on the history of Providentia, this time the emphasis is on nature. As we walk out of the neighbourhood in the direction of the Turfven, we immediately see a number of striking trees. If we stand with our backs to the former fen, we see the park that was created during the development of the neighbourhood. A brain image of someone having an epileptic fit was used to build the roads. As soon as you walk into the forest, you are suddenly in another world. First you have a view of what was once the Turfven, but which was reclaimed into farmland in the early 20th century. Together with the Peelven and the Stoeing, the Turfven was drained to turn the area into pasture and arable land. Seven oxen and 200 ‘ox drivers’ were used to accomplish this enormous task. Reminder of this is the ox on the church square in Sterksel. The Turfven itself also has a history. Remains of a Bronze Age burial mound have been found, as well as remains of huts from +/- 12,000 years ago. But of course we go primarily for the nature, and it certainly does not disappoint us. It may not be the season for many birds but you will still hear them from time to time. And if you are lucky you might even see deer crossing. In short, a very varied walk for the whole family with something for everyone. The walk is free and takes about 1.5 hours.
