Leende Parkeerplaats Molenberg tegenover Jagershorst |
|
On Sunday 15 December, IVN Heeze-Leende organises a public walk again. Accompanied by an expert nature guide, you will walk to the Molenberg/Molenheide area in Leende. Departure is at 14.00 from Molenberg car park opposite Jagershorst. Why ‘From mill to mill’? In the first half of the 20th century, there was still a windmill on the heath here, hence the name Molenberg for the area. The story goes that a maid with a bag of flour on her back was hit by the blades and died instantly. There's no need for hikers on the IVN walk to fear that because the mill was completely destroyed in a storm in 1940. Incidentally, this mill has not always stood here. The original Heimolen mill stood on the west side of Leende on a high drifting sand mountain, the ‘Molenberg’. During the construction of new roads and the Molenberg viaduct in the A2 motorway near Leende, the Molenberg was completely excavated. And then the nature walk itself. It leads across a heath and forest area and past drift sand areas overgrown with mountain pine. The area where we walk is part of the Leenderbos, the largest nature reserve in the region. The area consists mainly of conifers and is characterised as a typical production forest. In the past, there was considerable timber production, but today the emphasis is less on production and Leenderbos has developed into an area with various functions. Among other things, it is home to special animals and insects. The Leenderbos is part of a Natura-2000 area, making it a protected nature reserve. A beautiful area for a winter walk for the whole family. Participation is free of charge. Photo: Ton Meesters.
